Human Design Guide
What Is a Human Design Chart?
A Human Design chart, often called a BodyGraph, organizes calculated chart features such as Type, Strategy, Authority, Profile, Centers, Channels, and Gates into a system for reflective experimentation.
The chart begins with calculated data
Human Design calculations use birth date, time, and place. Because time can affect chart features, Soul Blueprints requires an exact time or an explicit acknowledgement that the time is approximate. The written layer receives calculated facts rather than inventing them.
Type, Strategy, and Authority
These three concepts are often introduced first, but they are not the entire chart. Type offers a broad mechanical family, Strategy is framed as an experiment, and Authority describes how decisions may become clearer within the system’s language.
Profile, Centers, Channels, and Gates
Profile adds a relational and developmental lens. Centers may be defined or undefined, while Channels and Gates describe more specific connections and themes. Interpretation should explain how the pieces interact instead of delivering a list of disconnected labels.
A framework for experimentation, not limitation
Human Design is best used as a reflective framework to test against lived experience. It should not be used to deny someone’s complexity, determine medical care, or make consequential decisions on another person’s behalf.

The five Human Design type labels
Soul Blueprints presents five reader-facing labels. Manifesting Generator remains a Generator subtype, so some sources describe the system as having four Types.
Manifestor
A non-Sacral type associated with initiating after consulting inner Authority and informing people who will be affected. Peace is the traditional Signature, while anger is treated as a signal to review resistance or alignment.
Generator
A Sacral type associated with waiting for something real to respond to before committing energy. Satisfaction is the traditional Signature, while frustration invites a review of what received the Sacral yes.
Manifesting Generator
A Generator subtype with a defined Sacral and manifesting potential. Its formal Strategy remains response first, even when movement becomes fast, nonlinear, or experimental after the body answers.
Projector
A non-Sacral type associated with guiding energy and waiting for recognition and invitation in major relational, vocational, and directional matters. Success and bitterness are used as reflective signals, not moral grades.
Reflector
A type with no defined Centers in the BodyGraph. Major decisions are traditionally given a lunar cycle so different conditions can be sampled before commitment. Surprise and disappointment are used as reflective signals.
Human Design inner authorities
Authority is calculated from the complete BodyGraph and follows a hierarchy. It cannot be guessed from personality, assigned from Type alone, or used as professional advice.
Emotional or Solar Plexus Authority
Clarity is understood to develop over time rather than at an emotional high or low. The practice is to avoid demanding instant certainty and to revisit important choices after the wave has moved.
Sacral Authority
Available to non-emotional Generators. It emphasizes an immediate embodied response to something concrete, often experienced before the mind has built a complete explanation.
Splenic Authority
Associated with quiet, present-moment instinct and bodily awareness. The signal may be subtle and immediate, so it is not the same as repeated mental fear or a guarantee of safety.
Ego Manifested Authority
A rare authority associated with will and the capacity to hear what the heart is genuinely willing to commit, communicate, or initiate. It is not permission to force constant productivity.
Ego Projected Authority
A rare Projector authority associated with recognizing what the heart truly wants and can support. Honest desire and realistic capacity matter more than proving worth.
Self-Projected Authority
A Projector authority associated with hearing direction emerge through the sound of the person's own voice in a receptive environment. The listener is a sounding board, not the decision maker.
Mental or Environmental Authority
Available to certain Projectors with no inner Authority. Clarity is explored by speaking in suitable environments with trusted sounding boards, while the final recognition remains personal.
Lunar Authority
The Reflector process for major decisions. Moving through roughly one lunar cycle allows the same question to be experienced under changing activations, conversations, and environments.
The 12 Human Design profiles
Profiles combine two of six lines. These concise descriptions are orientation only and do not reproduce a complete profile teaching.
Profile 1/3
Line 1 seeks a dependable foundation; Line 3 learns through direct experiment, discovery, and correction. This profile often needs both solid research and permission to learn by trying.
Profile 1/4
Line 1 builds understanding; Line 4 develops influence through trusted relationships and networks. A secure base supports contribution that travels through genuine connection.
Profile 2/4
Line 2 carries natural gifts and needs restorative privacy; Line 4 brings opportunities through familiar people. Recognition works best when retreat and relationship are both respected.
Profile 2/5
Line 2 needs space for natural talent to mature; Line 5 attracts projection and practical expectations. Clear agreements help distinguish a real invitation from someone else's imagined solution.
Profile 3/5
Line 3 discovers what works through lived testing; Line 5 is often expected to provide a usable answer. Honest experimentation and transparent expectations protect both learning and leadership.
Profile 3/6
Line 3 learns through experience; Line 6 develops a longer arc of observation and embodied example. The path can change texture over time as experiments become perspective.
Profile 4/6
Line 4 influences through relationship; Line 6 matures toward an observed and embodied example. Community matters, but so does enough distance to see which bonds support integrity.
Profile 4/1
Line 4 shares through established relationships; Line 1 seeks a firm and personally correct foundation. Once that foundation is secure, influence can become steady and focused.
Profile 5/1
Line 5 attracts hopes for practical leadership; Line 1 needs to investigate before offering an answer. Careful foundations and explicit limits reduce the pressure of projection.
Profile 5/2
Line 5 is seen as a potential problem solver; Line 2 needs privacy and selective recognition. Not every call must be answered, and usefulness does not require constant availability.
Profile 6/2
Line 6 develops wisdom across a long life process; Line 2 brings natural gifts and a need for retreat. Embodied example grows through observation, recovery, and correct recognition.
Profile 6/3
Line 6 seeks a life that can become an example; Line 3 keeps learning through real experience. Credibility comes from lived revision rather than an image of uninterrupted certainty.
The nine Human Design Centers
Centers are interpreted through their definition, openness, connections, and place in the whole BodyGraph. Center language is symbolic and must not be used for medical diagnosis.
Head Center
Inspiration and mental pressure. A defined Head is treated as a consistent way of carrying inspiration; an open Head may amplify questions and pressure from the environment.
Ajna Center
Conceptualization, interpretation, and mental frameworks. Definition suggests a consistent way of processing, while openness can sample many perspectives without needing certainty about all of them.
Throat Center
Communication, expression, action, and manifestation in Human Design language. Its meaning changes according to definition and the Channels that connect to it.
G Center
Identity, love, direction, and orientation. Definition is associated with a more consistent sense of direction; openness may make place and company especially important.
Ego or Heart Center
Will, value, promises, and material commitment. It is not a measure of human worth, and an undefined Ego does not mean a person lacks value or ambition.
Sacral Center
Sustainable life force, work energy, sexuality, and response. A defined Sacral identifies the Generator family; an undefined Sacral benefits from recognizing when enough is enough.
Solar Plexus Center
Emotion, sensitivity, and emotional awareness. When defined, it creates Emotional Authority; when open, a person may amplify and learn from surrounding emotional waves.
Splenic Center
Instinct, intuition, pattern recognition, and present-moment awareness. Symbolic chart language must not be mistaken for medical or immune-system diagnosis.
Root Center
Physical pressure, momentum, stress, and the push to begin or complete. Openness can amplify hurry, while definition can provide a more consistent pressure pattern.
Core Human Design chart concepts
These terms explain how a BodyGraph is organized. A responsible reading keeps structural chart facts separate from reflective interpretation.
BodyGraph
The visual chart that maps nine Centers, Channels, Gates, and planetary activations from birth data within the Human Design system.
Type
A broad structural category derived from Center definition and connections. It supplies the chart's Strategy and traditional Signature and Not-Self theme.
Strategy
The system's starting experiment for meeting opportunities and reducing resistance. Strategy does not replace consent, facts, responsibilities, or ordinary judgment.
Authority
The chart-specific decision process placed ahead of mental analysis. Authority must be read from the actual chart and must never be assigned from Type alone.
Aura
Human Design language for the way each Type is said to meet and interact with other people. It is a system concept, not a scientifically measured personal force field.
Signature
A traditional experiential signal, such as satisfaction, peace, success, or surprise, used to notice when life may be moving with less resistance.
Not-Self Theme
A traditional signal, such as frustration, anger, bitterness, or disappointment, used for reflection rather than shame, diagnosis, or proof that a person failed.
Defined and Undefined Centers
Colored Centers are described as more consistent; white Centers as more open to conditioning and learning. Neither state is better, and openness is not emptiness.
Definition
The way defined Centers connect into one or more continuous areas in the BodyGraph. It describes internal connectivity, not the quality of a person's relationships.
Channels
Complete pathways connecting two Centers through paired Gates. A defined Channel contributes to the structural definition used to derive Type and Authority.
Gates
Sixty-four positions linked to the I Ching hexagrams. An activated Gate may form a complete Channel when the Gate at its other end is also active.
Profile
One of twelve line combinations derived from the conscious and unconscious Sun and Earth positions. It describes a recurring learning and relational role within the system.
Personality and Design
Black activations are associated with conscious Personality; red activations with unconscious Design. A combined activation can appear in both colors.
Incarnation Cross
A theme calculated from the Personality and Design Sun and Earth Gates. It is interpreted as a broad life theme, not a fixed job title or guaranteed destiny.
